A new photography exhibition, The Furzedown Project celebrates their 50th anniversary, food & drink deals, new openings, and much more in Tooting this week!
Tooting's Springfield Hospital, part of South West London and St George’s Mental Health NHS Trust, has launched Deaf Mosaic, a photography exhibition celebrating the diverse achievements of Deaf individuals.
The exhibition states, "With the right support, Deaf people can do anything," and features 25 intimate portraits that range from fashion models and athletes to TV chefs, actresses, coffee baristas, and architects.
The exhibition is now on display in Springfield University Hospital’s Trinity building. A hospital spokesperson said, "As one of the UK’s leading providers of specialist mental health services for Deaf people, our Trust is working to enhance the accessible mental health support and care it offers its patients and service users with creativity. The installation not only improves the physical environment, but plays a vital role in uplifting and empowering individuals facing mental health challenges."
Deaf Mosaic is the brainchild of renowned photographer Stephen Iliffe who, as a Deaf individual himself, understands the crucial need for visible role models. He says, "Growing up, I often felt as if I was the only Deaf person in the world. Seeing assertive Deaf role models in everyday spaces like NHS waiting rooms would have made an enormous difference. Today, I want every Deaf child and adult to know they deserve the chance to dream big and to receive the support they need to make those dreams a reality."

Homeowners in Tooting and SW London! Do you need a cash boost and have a spare room to rent? Meet Justin, local resident and CEO of Moovable, who help homeowners turn their spare rooms into upfront cash!
Justin tells us, "If you’ve got a spare room and you're open to renting it out, we give you a tax free lump sum of £3,000 to £15,000 upfront – your lodger’s rent pays it back, and there’s no interest and no impact on your credit score.
"We handle the hard stuff – contracts, background checks etc, but you keep control of who you live with; you choose the lodger, either from a list we provide, or it may be someone you already have in mind.
"Every month, you’ll also get a 5% share of the rent and a contribution towards bills. Plus, at the end of the agreement, you earn a further 7.5% completion bonus payment if the housemate has remained for the full term.
"And right now, the first 10 people who join and mention NEWSIE get a £350 voucher to spend at Furniture City stores in Earlsfield or Balham!
"We’ll handle finding the right housemate, all the paperwork, and ongoing management – you just enjoy the lump sum and monthly income!"

Andrea from AK Acupuncture is back at Cycle Culture in Tooting, and at The Exhibit in Balham, offering ear acupuncture group sessions for wellbeing & stress management during July & August!
Andrea, a local acupuncturist who specialises in women’s health, menopause health, mental health and cosmetic facial acupuncture, will be at Cycle Culture at 8pm on Thursdays from the 10th of July, as well as a new location – the Exhibit in Balham – every Wednesday, 12-2pm, from the 9th of July.
Andrea tells us, “Ear acupuncture is a powerful, convenient and affordable practice which uses small, ultra-thin sterilised needles to stimulate 5 acupuncture points on each ear to unblock energy channels, leaving you feeling relaxed and rejuvenated.
“After one session, people report feeling relaxed, energised, having improved mental clarity, and sleeping really well that evening. After several weekly sessions, people have reported feeling less burnt out, more emotionally balanced, less anxious or depressed, with improved confidence, increased motivation, and reduced alcohol consumption.”
“Evening sessions help you relax and detox after a stressful or hectic day of work or parenting, whilst lunchtime sessions are perfect for those who need a break away from work or their laptops.
“Just come as you are – all you do is sit for 30-40mins while the acupuncture does its thing!”
Andrea is offering a special introductory price of £10 per person tonight (10th of July). Prices thereafter are:
• Cycle Culture, 64 Upper Tooting Road (8pm Thursdays): £27.50 pay as you go, or £100 for 4 sessions, £150 for 6.

Good luck to staff from Tooting's St Boniface RC Primary School, who (despite the hot weather) will be taking on a 7‑mile stretch of the Wandle Walk tomorrow, Friday 11th July, to raise vital funds for Deen City Farm.
The local community farm is a cherished partner of the school, regularly visiting their Early Years classes with a variety of animals, and giving students hands-on experiences that spark curiosity and learning.
Sadly, Deen City Farm is currently facing financial difficulties. To show their appreciation and to help ensure they can continue enriching lives – both at our school and across the local area – school staff will be walking to fundraise for the farm.
Any support is greatly appreciated. Donations welcome here.

Congratulations to Tooting resident Mark Agnew on the publication of his book, There Will Be Headwinds!
Mark and his teammates made history when they kayaked the Arctic’s Northwest Passage in 2023. The fabled Arctic route has defeated explorers for centuries, but the four adventurers, called the Arctic Cowboys, overcame the odds and traversed the route in 103 days. They faced icebergs, freezing temperatures and plenty of near death experiences, including a curious polar bear waking them up as it rubbed against their tent!
They earned two world firsts – the first to kayak the Northwest Passage and the first to complete it by human power in a single year.
Mark was awarded European Adventurer of the Year for the endeavour, as well as other accolades like Top 10 Greatest Kayaking Expeditions of the Century.
Mark is a professional after dinner and keynote speaker for organisations all over the world, but is always willing to give free talks to any state school or care home in the London area – email him at mark@adventureagnew.com to find out more.
There Will Be Headwinds is available in bookshops and online.
COMING SOON TO TOOTING: ICICI Bank is to open a branch at 5 Tooting High Street.
